Tim O'Malley

urrounded by great support from local IFBB Pros and family and friends, Tim O'Malley has been able to take his physique to the National level after winning not, one but many bodybuilding Overall's in the Pacific Northwest. Tim's physique is a showcase of old school, hardcore training! He believes in sticking with the basics but also going hard and heavy doing them when everyone else is looking for new training styles or techniques. When you see Tim onstage, there is no doubt he is one of the most conditioned guys onstage and packs alot of muscle on a middleweight frame. Watch out for Tim as he finally jumps up to the NPC USA stage in Las Vegas this summer!

1. When and why did you decide to start competing?

After my wrestling days were over I took up powerlifting. I signed up at Olympic gym and saw Sheila Bleck training there. I was so impressed with her physique that I knew bodybuilding was what I wanted to do. I started training hard for my first show in 2003 and Sheila was kind enough to show me some posing and give me advice. I was so grateful a competitor at her level would take personal time to help me. I was highly motivated to do my best and prove that her time wasn't wasted.

2. What makes you want to go farther in the sport?

I love the constant challenge of trying to improve my physique. I've played a lot of sports and nothing has been as challenging physically and mentally as bodybuilding. I'm not necessarily looking for trophies and titles, I just really want to be better than last time I competed.


3. What type of training do you implement during contest prep and the in the off-season?

I believe in training heavy compound movements like bench press, squat, and deadlift in the off season. During contest prep this doesn't change. I feel that if I can continue to train these lifts almost as heavy as I do in the off season that I hold onto more muscle while dieting.

4. What is your favorite type of dieting meals and what is your favorite type of cheat meal?

My favorite diet food is oatmeal because you can be creative with it and use different sugar free flavors. My favorite cheat meal is burger and fries with ice cream! I also love sushi for a cleaner cheat meal.


5. Who are some of the people that have helped you along the way to get where you are now in life or in the sport?

My wife Julie has helped me so much to get where I am in the sport. She is very supportive of the lifestyle and wants to help me reach my goals. I work a full time job as an elevator mechanic, so she takes care of food prep and all the other daily tasks of a bodybuilder. When I'm not at work I'm able to focus on my workout and relaxing with my family because she is so helpful. She is also a beast in the gym and shares a passion for the lifestyle. Bodybuilding is a sport most people don't understand. The end product of my hard work is standing on a stage, painted all dark, greased up, and in tiny posing trunks. My Mom has done a great job looking past all that and has learned about the sport. She will tell me things like your back has so much more detail now. I really appreciate her support and understanding of my bodybuilding. Bleu Taylor has also helped me a lot in the sport. We became friends a long time ago when we were both tiny. We shared a passion for trying to get huge! He is always doing research and wants to help me get better. I greatly appreciate his friendship and advice.


6. Who or what inspires you to strive for more in the sport?

I'm inspired by the pain and suffering it takes to build muscle and burn all your fat off. Working hard makes me feel alive, and working harder than I did the last time is a challenge that I love.


7. What is next for you as a competitor?

I just won the men's bodybuilding overall at the Oregon State Championships. It was my 3rd overall bodybuilding win in the Northwest, so it's time to step it up. I'm doing my first National level show and competing in the USA bodybuilding championships on July 29th!


8. What is your favorite memory good or bad while prepping or competing?

My favorite memory while prepping was the first time I saw my glutes! I was so excited and yelling for my wife to come into the bathroom and take pictures. I went around all day showing people pictures of my butt muscles.
