TAMI OUGH
Sport: Fitness | IFBB PRO Fitness
Facebook | TamiOugh.com
NPC Oregon is proud to introduce Oregon's very own IFBB Fitness Pro Tami Ough. Tami has been seen competing and guest posing at many of the shows here in Oregon. Tami is one of the few that have earned the coveted IFBB Pro card. All the while working full time as a Nurse and also raising two children with her husband.
1. When and why did you decide to start competing?
I originally started competing in 1995 when this "new" thing called "fitness competitions" was just getting started. I had been a gymnast and cheerleader most of my childhood, and missed the feeling that my sports gave me. I actually entered the Ms Fitness Oregon pageant that year, placing second. I competed a few more times over the next 2 years, but stopped after becoming pregnant with my daughter in 1997.... fast forward six years.... I really wanted to prove to all the women out there that having children doesn't "ruin" your body! (When I competed prior to having children, I would hear the statement daily.... "you only look like that because you haven't had kids yet.") I entered and won the 2003 Washington Ironman, and I was HOOKED!
2. What makes you want to go farther in the sport?
I love the challenge! I love pushing my body to its limit and seeing what I can accomplish.
3. What type of training do you implement during contest prep and the in the off-season?
For the last year, I have been training exclusively with Crossfit. The only thing that changes from on season to off season is my diet. I add more running and sprint work when I am leaning out, but my workouts stay pretty intense year round. Crossfit has changed my body more than any other training method I have ever tried.
4. What is your favorite type of dieting meals and what is your favorite type of cheat meal?
When dieting, I find that tilapia is the easiest protein to eat and digest :) I love a good poached tilapia filet with fresh steamed green beans and a big chunk of baked yam.
For cheat meals.... hmmmm...... anything goes! I find that each time I diet down for a show, I have a particular type of food that appeals to me at that time. I went through a mexican phase....where I had to have fajitas or quesadillas for every cheat meal :) Another time of dieting.... I had to have greasy cheeseburgers and fries for every cheat meal. One consistent thing throughout my life is my love of Oreos! oh, and cookie dough!!!
My favorite candy that I eat back stage at EVERY fitness show is Hot Tamales! They are my "secret weapon" for a rockin fitness routine! lol
5. Who are some of the people that have helped you along the way to get where you are now in life or in the sport?
Numero uno... my husband Trent! He has put up with more craziness than any man should!! It is really, really difficult to be married to someone who competes in this industry.
My Mom is my greatest cheerleader, and critic! She helps me perfect my fitness routines prior to my shows. She and my Dad taught me that the "sky was the limit" growing up!
My Nutritionists Pete and Apple Grubbs with Construction Zone have been with me since 2004! They completely helped me change my physique into a "National Level" physique :) I owe them so much!
Tanji Johnson is one of the most incredible mentors and role models a girl can ask for! She is a wonderful human being and a savvy business woman :)
6. Who or what inspires you to strive for more in the sport?
My fellow competitors! Those girls are AMAZING! When one girl pushes the limits higher.... it challenges ALL of us to push harder and accomplish the impossible.
7. What is next for you as a competitor?
I am competing in the Crossfit World Games in July. I am a member of Oregon Crossfit's national level team. We are going to DOMINATE in L.A. :)
8. What is your favorite memory good or bad while prepping or competing?
Good: hearing my name called in first place at nationals..... and knowing I had achieved my pro card!
Bad: falling on stage (in heels) at my first contest in 2003..... it was hilarious! Caught my shoe on a piece of carpet that had been placed on the stage to cover an uneven area. Luckily, it happened when we were walking off stage and the judges were busy looking down at their score cards! (I still ended up winning.... but you should have heard my Mom GASP as I fell!)
9. Any website you would like to plug, facebook, twitter, personal site, etc...

10. Anything you would like to say to all the visitors to NPC Oregon?
GET INVOLVED!!! Fitness/ Figure/ and Bodybuilding needs more competitors and more spectators! The future of our sport depends on you! Competing is one of the most exciting things you will ever do. If you have ever wondered what it would be like, or secretly wanted to try it, JUST DO IT!
